Sleeping Northern Saw-whet Owl, Bonny Reservoir, Yuma County, Colorado, 12/22/02. The pundits (Larry Semo and Tony Leukering) tell me that this is a 1st winter bird, based on the even coloring and wear on the flight feathers (adults molt these feathers in a sequence resulting in some fresher and some more worn feathers being present at the same time, I think.) Soaking up some afternoon sunlight, it would take a little peek at what we were doing and then resume napping.
