Sub-adult Pomarine Jaeger, Chatfield Reservoir (Jefferson/Douglas
Counties), Colorado, 11/8/03. Tony Leukering comments: "The helmet
is not sharp and has scattered pale feathers. I cannot find any
barred, juvenal underwing feathers (which are usually the last tracts
completely replaced), but those same feathers look as if they’re
in a bit of disarray, so…. While I'm certain that an adult
could have such a beat-up tail, I think that the tail, in combination
with the head pattern and messy underwing suggest that the bird is probably
in Alternate II, possibly Alternate III." |
